Hotels and restaurants around the world are taking advantage of Dec. 12, 2012 with terrific 12-12-12 trips, deals, and steals like $12 meals and $12 amenities.

See 12 Terrific 12-12-12 Trips and Deals Slideshow

In a typical year, Dec. 12 — the 346th day of the year — doesn’t hold much significance to most folks, though it is the birthdate of American actress Mayim Bialik, American gymnast Cathy Rigby, and singer Connie Francis and the anniversary of the Russian Federation gaining independence from the USSR. But for some, Dec. 12, 2012, or 12-12-12, is a special day, and hotels and restaurants are hoping travelers and food lovers will get in the spirit of the triple 12 day.

In recent years, we have seen 10-10-10, 11-11-11, and even the Beijing Olympics were carefully coordinated to begin at 8:08 p.m. on 08-08-08, but 12-12-12 is the last time we’ll see a triple-12 date like this until 12-12-2112.

When The Daily Meal heard that hotels and restaurants were offering extraordinary deals and that Madison Square Garden in New York City is hosting a benefit concert for Hurricane Sandy relief on 12-12-12, The Daily Meal asked celebrity numerology expert Julian Michael why some folks were making such a fuss.

"People are fascinated by things that are duplicated. We’re fascinated by things that are different," said Michael, who has consulted celebrities like actors Jim Carrey and Eddie Murphy, and designer Donna Karan. "It’s all about joy; it’s about celebrating. This vibration is a celebration of the child within oneself. It’s about making a difference, being enthusiastic about the mystic, and that no matter what happens, we’re still here."

But the date may hold a higher significance beyond travel and meal deals. According to Michael, "one" symbolizes self, "two" stands for sharing, and "three" is the trinity, and there’s the belief that events occur in threes. Then, take the date, Dec. 12, and you have 12 months in a year, 12 houses of astrological signs, and 12 apostles. But no matter all the correlations, no day of celebration is complete without food or spirits, so these 12 terrific 12-12-12 trips are here to provide that.

While hotels from coast to coast (and even abroad) are offering $12 deals, like The Homestead in Hot Springs, Va., which is serving a $12 lunch by executive chef Sean O’Connell, others have deals in multiples of 12, like the Waldorf-Astoria Chicago, which is offering 36 percent off (12+12+12) suites at the 188-room hotel, which houses popular bistro Balsan and bar Bernard’s.

Deals like these aren’t sure to last; several are valid for travel long after the nifty numbered day is past (you just have to book on 12-12-12), but others are only valid on Dec. 12, which gives you a convenient excuse to escape the holiday hustle with a quick staycation or getaway.

Here's where to book your next vacation once those COVID-19 bargain prices dry up

The White House COVID-19 Task Force release new guidance Monday for fully vaccinated people, but not without a warning on travel. (March 8) AP Domestic

It's been a buyer's market for travel since the start of the pandemic. But that's about to change.

The average roundtrip domestic airfare dropped 15% last year, to $302, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Hotel rates plummeted 21%, to $103, lodging data from STR found.

But the era of cheap travel will end soon, experts predict. The only questions are, when will it be over – and how long do you have to book a low price?

People like Glen Fisher want to know. In January, he found an incredible deal to fly business class from Denver to Rio de Janeiro on United Airlines ($1,290) and rooms at the JW Marriott on Copacabana Beach for $105 per night. A Hertz rental at the airport cost just $14.95 per day.

"I don't think we will ever see these prices again in my lifetime," says Fisher, a risk engineer from Castle Rock, Colorado.

The Best Weekend Getaways

Where to spend a few blissful days for that well-deserved break.

What's a weekend in the age of Covid-19? During quarantine, our days have blurred together, weekdays nearly indistinguishable from weekends. But as a tiny semblance of normalcy returns, especially with hotels across the country having reopened this summer, perhaps it's time to put a few weekend trips back on the calendar. Whether you're an Angeleno looking to escape to the beach for a few days, a New Yorker in dire need of open skies and mountain air, or are feeling brave enough to hop on a plane, here are our top quick getaways for that much deserved break.

Orange County has no shortage of stunning beaches and the Montage Laguna Beach occupies a prime piece of real estate. It's just a five minute drive to the center of Laguna Beach, with all of its boutiques, restaurants, and art galleries, yet it feels removed enough from that downtown scene&mdashand its beach is far less crowded. Plus, all rooms, which are at least 500 square feet, have ocean views and private balconies. The hardest decision you'll make is whether to spend the day on the beach or inside that beautiful mosaic pool.

If you're able to produce a negative Covid-19 test taken within a week before arrival, Bermuda makes for a perfect weekend getaway. It's just a two hour flight from NYC and Washington, D.C., meaning it basically takes less time to get there than it does to drive out to the Hamptons. Once you're on the island, head to The Loren at Pink Beach, which recently unveiled three new and spacious villas perfect for a more private stay. The one- and three-bedroom villas have their own private pools, making them prime spots for lounging and sipping on Bermuda's famed rum swizzles.

This 27-mile stretch of sparkling ocean and beach is the epitome of barefoot luxury, which is why so many Hollywood A-listers own homes here. Hotels are pretty scarce, all the more lending to Malibu's locals-only vibe. Stay at the 47-room Malibu Beach Inn, located right on the water on a strip of coastline nicknamed Billionaire's Beach for all of its famous homeowners, like Larry Ellison, who owns 10 properties. For a real splurge, book a room at the intimate 16-room Nobu Ryokan, an oasis like no other that marries serene Japanese minimalism with the iconic California coast.

Located along Georgia's Atlantic coast between Savannah and Jacksonville, Florida, Jekyll Island is one of the barrier islands comprising the Golden Isles. Here you can summer like the Vanderbilts, Morgans, Pultizers, and Rockefellers once did at the Jekyll Island Club Resort. All of its rooms and cottages have recently received a refresh and there are loads of leisure activities, 20+ miles of paved bicycle exploration, and two open-air restaurants. It'll be easy to see why some of the great American dynasties returned year after year.

A quick two hour drive from New York City, Washington, Connecticut has long been a retreat for a very discerning, moneyed crowd because of its rollings hills, historic architecture, and proximity to the city. Soak that all in at the grand Mayflower Inn & Spa, an Auberge Resort, set on 58 acres of manicured gardens and woodland. There's plenty to do, including hiking, fly-fishing, archery, tennis, and croquet. This fall, for its 100th anniversary, the hotel is getting an upgrade by celebrated designer Celerie Kemble.

Reminiscent of a grand Cape Cod cottage, Santa Monica's Shutters of the Beach has, true to its name, shuttered doors that open onto breezy balconies and rooms that were designed by Michael S. Smith (he who redecorated the Obamas' White House), plus a sizable pool and al fresco dining with ocean views&mdasha perfect spot for enjoying those legendary west coast sunsets. Think California Dream, with a little bit of New England charm.

Want to escape to a quaint New England seaside village? Look no further than Martha's Vineyard, with its miles of beaches and historic houses. The Obamas, noted fans of the area, purchased a $12 million estate here last year. Stay in Edgartown, a former whaling port, and you'll have access to shops, galleries, and restaurants galore (Martha's Vineyard is currently in phase three of reopening which includes the above). The Christopher is a chic boutique hotel with just 15 rooms that mix modern design with a classic New England aesthetic. For a seamless&mdashand fast (read: no traffic)&mdashtrip from the New York area, book a flight on Tradewind Aviation.

Stowe may be a popular ski destination, but it's equally appealing in the summer with its abundance of outdoor pursuits. And, obviously, the foliage alone is reason enough to visit in the fall months. The 68-room Topnotch Resort sits on an expansive 120 acres with views of Mount Mansfield. All hotel activities have resumed, including horseback riding, ATV tours, biking, wagon rides, and, in a pandemic-era rarity, even the spa is fully open.

Seattle was built for summer&mdashit's when the city sheds all the gray, gloom, and rain and really comes alive. Plus, the balmy weather lasts well into September. There are so many outdoor activities to fill the weekend, from kayaking to hiking, not to mention the three national parks that surround the city (Olympic, Mount Rainier, and North Cascades). The Four Seasons Hotel is an oasis of beauty and calm, located steps from Pike Place and overlooking Elliot Bay. The glamorous hotel has everything you'd want for a safe, socially-distanced weekend, including a roof top pool and plenty of al fresco dining.

When the Asbury Hotel opened in 2016, it promised to bring about a much classier era to the oft-maligned Jersey Shore. It's just an hour away from NYC but will feel like a proper vacation. Aside from the beach, which is a block away, the Asbury has plenty of al fresco spaces fit for play, including an expansive rooftop space that screens outdoor movies, one of summer's most socially-distanced activities.

It is a bit of a trek to get to this Colorado hideaway, but so worth it for its unlimited supply of fresh mountain air. The Madeline Hotel & Residences, an Auberge Resort, is surrounded on three sides by the majestic San Juan Mountains. Horseback ride through Colorado's backcountry, go fly fishing, cycle the mountains, or simply let the hotel set up a picnic feast for you in the middle of a scenic alpine meadow. However you choose to spend your days, you're guaranteed to return home as refreshed as ever.

The South Fork of Long Island (aka the Hamptons, Montauk) may be buzzier in the summer but for a more low-key, quiet, and down-to-earth alternative, head to the North Fork. Oysters at Little Creek Oyster Farm in Greenport are a must, as are the homemade pies at Briermere Farms in Riverhead. Then spend your afternoons visiting the area's many wineries, such as Bedell, Sparkling Pointe, and Kontokosta before retiring to the Sound View Greenport, a chic hotel where every room looks out onto the Long Island Sound and has direct access to the private beach.

Located just west of Bartlesville in the heart of the Osage Nation in northeast Oklahoma, Osage Hills State Park is a prime example of Oklahoma's natural beauty. With lush forests, rocky bluffs and serene waters, the park boasts 1,100 acres of scenery. A visit to Osage Hills State Park in the fall will inspire visitors, as the foliage transforms from green to vivid shades of yellow, orange and red.

Trails on the rocky, hilly terrain provide a challenge to hikers and mountain bikers, and there are many to choose from in Osage Hills State Park. Visitors may catch a glimpse of white-tailed deer or a wild turkey while on the trails. Tennis courts and a ball field are available to visitors, and the swimming pool provides a great way to cool off on a hot day.

Fishing is a favorite activity in Osage Hills State Park. Anglers can test their skills and try their luck at Lookout Lake or at Sand Creek, which winds through the park. Bass, crappie, catfish and sunfish, among other fish, can be found. Fishing boats are available for rental at the lake.

RV sites with water and electricity hookups, as well as tent sites are available at Osage Hills State Park. Reservations for all tent and RV sites must be made online. The park also offers a waste dump station for RVs. Visitors can camp in canvas wall tents pitched on a wooden platform or relax in one of eight native stone cabins, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930's.

Each cabin has central heat and air, a fireplace, kitchen facilities and allows pets for a small nightly fee. Cabins one through three and five through eight offer one bedroom, while cabin four offers two bedrooms. The park offers a picnic area and picnic pavilions, as well as comfort stations and a facility with modern bathhouses.

A group camp is also available. It consists of a large dining hall with two fireplaces, as well as tables and seating for 120 people. The on-site commercial kitchen has a walk-in cooler, ice machine and enough utensils to serve 120 people. There is also an attached bathhouse. A total of nine bunkhouses are available to sleep up to 118 people, and there is another bathhouse near the bunkhouses.

Day 2: Saugatuck to Glen Arbor (185 miles)

Take a sunrise hike through the dunes at Saugatuck from Mount Baldhead Park to Oval Beach before hitting the highway (196 to 131) for Holland, 12 miles north. The Dutch-settled town has a popular tulip festival (in May) and a working windmill in Windmill Island Gardens (you can buy the flour it grinds in the gift shop), as well as an 1870-vintage lighthouse known as Big Red at Holland State Park. Pick up picnic fare at DeBoer's Bakery, including Dutch brown bread and double-fried chicken sandwiches.

Take it about 20 miles north to the beach at Grand Haven or the town's 2.5-mile harborside boardwalk, where you can snap photos of its 1839-vintage lighthouse (this is also a great place to rent a bike from Sun Sports Rentals and cycle some of the 20-mile paved Lakeshore Trail that connects Holland and Grand Haven).

Fifteen miles north in Muskegon, drive by the Victorian-era Hackley and Hume historic houses to get a look at the wealth generated a century ago by lumber barons. Nearby, stroll the Monet Garden, a mini replica of painter Claude Monet's famous garden in Giverny, France, and restock your picnic cooler at the Cheese Lady downtown. Let the guides of Mac Wood's Dune Rides take the wheel over the 2,000-acre dunes of Silver Lake State Park in a 40-minute tour exploring the dune habitat and delivering open-air thrills.

Just north of Manistee, take Motorway 22 to stick to the lake route to catch a picture-perfect sunset as you pull into Glen Arbor for fried smelt and local Vernors sodas at 1934-landmark Art's Tavern.

Where to stay: The Omni Homestead offers a full complement of resort amenities — pool, spa, golf course — as well as a mile of Lake Michigan shore. Rooms start at about $250 a night and up.
